The Lawrence was open well into the mid-1960s. we saw all the Russ Meyer flicks there, including many “adult” films [tame today] like “The Doll” [Sweden,‘64], “Cold Wind In August”, “High Yellow” and others.

Meyer’s Films were tame has you stated. He did do a big budget for him, wasn’t it “BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS” early 70’s and was a X-rated movie.

Is this the small theater that was near Yale University? It showed John Waters' PINK FLAMINGOS and other “art” films.
I did see BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS, but it was at the Paramount on Temple Street or the Roger Sherman on College Street…

I just remembered – I saw PINK FLAMINGOS at the LINCOLN THEATER, that is the small theater near Yale. (I should have known when I saw the 710 seating!! The LINCOLN is a much smaller theater, (probably under 300)

The Lawrence Theater in the 1950’s was a lot of fun. 25 cent Saturday matinees, with films like “Forbidden Planet” and “Invaders from Mars”—which were scary to a 10 year old kid! I remember walking home from there to our house on Wallace Street (near State) on late fall afternnon with lots of leaves all over the street and long shadows, and spooked by those Sci-Fi B-films. Hah! Nice memories—too bad the place went away.
