Mena Drive-In

The Mena Drive-In was opened by 1949 and was operated by Cowden & Longacre. It had a capacity for 220 cars. By 1955 it was operated by Wren Theatres and had a capacity for 150 cars. It was still showing movies in the early-1980’s.

As the above marquee shows “ELVIS” movies were always a solid hit at the Drive-ins.The Mena drive-in put 220 cars on the lot owned by Longacre & Cowden.

1994 GE imagery shows what appears to be a drive-in at the SE corner of Hwy 88/59/71 and Morrow St (Hwy 8).

Looks like a big Exxon gas station complex at the property now. Screen faced North, from the back of the drive in, entrance from the main hwy.

From the Motion Picture Herald, Oct. 6, 1951: Wren Theatres, Mena, Ark., has purchased the Mena Drive-in from Gordon Longacre and C. C. Cowden, the company announced this week. The circuit also owns two conventional theatres in Mena, the Lyric and the Lil, purchased last year from L. E. Gwaltney.
