Workmen's Hall Cinema

Situated just behind the popular Astoria Cinema, this venue, which was built in 1907, was equipped for a variety of uses including live performance, bingo and cinema. While many cinemas had closed, leaving just the Astoria Cinema in operation this venue offered bingo. Following the closure of the Astoria Cinema the venue switched to showing films.

The interior featured original gas lighting as house lights on the side walls during the 1970’s.

It operated as a bingo hall until around March 2010.

During a visit to Ebbw Vale this month I was surprised and saddened to see that the former Workmen’s Hall has ceased trading as a bingo club, the front doors boarded up and a for sale sign sadly positioned above the doorway.

While visiting the town in 2009 the venue was still operating as a bingo club. I understand that the venue ceased bingo in February or March 2010.

It is hard to imagine what use will be made of this historic building now that bingo is no longer viable.

Perhaps it could be used as a film club of some type, bringing big screen entertainment back to the town.
