Dalston Picture Palace

Located on Dalston Lane opposite the entrance to the Dalston Theatre(later Gaumont, now demolished, which has its own page on Cinema Treasures). The Dalston Picture Theatre opened in 1910 and was still open in 1916. It was operated by Louis Silverman and was possibly a shop conversion.

It has had various uses over the years, including in the 1930’s a school of dancing. The decorative fa├žade was removed in the 1950’s. The interior has also been stripped back to bare brick. In recent years it has operated as a pub named Farr’s School of Dancing and in October 2021 films were being screened again.

Quite a grand frontage, the building is now a very large bar called Farrs Dance School the interior of which dates back to the time of the cinema, although no trace remains inside but the frontage looks like it was replaced in the 40’s/50’s

new photos added of the 1910 planning application, the address though is 17/19 Dalston Lane. The plan shows the building pretty much as it is today internally. The projection room is listed as the Biograph Chamber and was at 1st floor level so the auditorium was very tall and very square. I have also added plans for an upgrade of the cinema and the addition of new toilets in 1916, so it must have been in operation until a later date than suggested.

The frontage of the building dates from the 50’s and was possibly the result of wartime bomb damage due to this high explosive device in late 1940/early 1941 http://www.bombsight.org/bombs/27517/
