Located in the east London inner city district of Hoxton, opposite the Geffrye Museum at 117 Kingsland Road. The Gainsborough Picture Palace was opened in March 1913 and was operated by William George Hornsey. By 1925 it was being operated by Ben Jay. In 1932, it was operated by a Mrs K. Pettifor, and was closed soon after. In 1935 it was re-opened as the Gaiety Cinema and was closed in 1939.
It went into retail use by Michael Harvey & Co. Ltd. who were still occupying the building in 1956. It was later demolished a block of flats named Geffrye Estate has been built on the surrounding area.

Whilst searching for the Gaiety Theatre, Shoreditch, an old time music hall & theatre that was on the corner of Essex St (now Shenfield St)& Kingsland Road I came across the Gainsboro Picture Palace with the same address. I then looked at the map and it intimated it was in the wrong location. I believe the theatres are one and the same. I know for sure that the new location is correct as it is directly opposite the Geffrye Museum and they flats in veiw are Geffrye Court, the second one on the ground floor is where my parents lived for many years. I do hope this info is of use.
