- Jun 30, 2009 — Drive-in in danger of closing
The Glen Dale Drive-In opened on July 1, 1949 with Anthony Quinn in “Black Gold”.
It operated a flea market on Sundays to help increase revenue, and keep it going. It was closed in 2012 and demolished around 2018, but the screen still stands in 2023.

I stopped by in March 2010. The drive-in is pretty rundown and was still closed for the season.

I have been operating the 35mm movie projector at the Glendale Drive In for 25 years. I was trained by John Ramser, the late owner. He loved running the movies and always kept the equipment operating because he liked seeing young children and their parents come to the outdoor movies and enjoy themselves. John’s passing was a blow to those of us who have tried to keep the theater going, but we have persevered. It’s a lot of work for very little money, but there is great satisfaction in doing something that very few others can do. I especially like seeing the expressions on kids faces when I give them a tour of the projection room and tell how the magic works. Young and old alike always marvel at the process of running movie film from the platters to the projector. We at the Glendale Drive In are now facing the real possibility that our lease will not be renewed. The gas and oil people want our field for their pipes and machinery. The future is uncertain for our outdoor movies, but I will always recall the past 25 summers with warm satisfaction.
reelman..Do have pictures you can share? If not can you take some post them?
Thanks reelman.
Status should be changed to closed, it hasn’t opened since the end of the 2012 season.
Is the flea market still running?
Who is the owner of property?
Opened on July 1, 1949 with Anthony Quinn in “Black Gold” (unclear if any short subjects were added) with an original installation of a mammoth screen.
A closer address is 1620 Wheeling Ave, Glen Dale, WV.
Google Maps has updated their addresses and this puts it right on the property.
The current overhead from Google Maps shows the screen intact, but the rest of the property was bulldozed around 2018 with no trace of the projection booth/concession stand or even the ramps remaining.
