Located on the corner of Bristol Hill and Warrington Road, Brislington, south-east of the city centre. The Ritz Cinema opened on 8th October 1938 with Robert Taylor in “A Yank at Oxford” and a seating capacity of 1,400.
In the mid-1960s, I did some relief work at the Forum Cinema, Bath. Two of the projectionists had been former box staff at the Ritz Cinema and related much information about the cinema. On a day trip to Bristol we stopped off at Ritz Cinema, Brislington and I was shown the outside of the building. Apparently it was built to a rather unusual format in that it was wide rather than long. This gave it a very big screen which required extra large anamorphic lenses.
At that time it was not possible to see the inside of the hall because it was boarded up.
The Ritz Cinema was closed on 20th July 1968. It was partially demolished (the front of the building was removed) and became a Kwik-Save supermarket and it later became a DIY store.
