The Varsity Theatre opened in 1927. It was taken over by Commonwealth Theatres in 1955 and closed around 1963. It was reopened in February 1967 and was renamed Film Arts Theatre. It was closed May 2, 1972.
Between 1972 and 1991 it was used for various functions such as craft shows and antique sales. In 1991 it reopened as the Blue Note Theatre, a nightclub and live performance venue.

In the late 1960s, the Varsity became the Film Arts Theatre, which was run by Commonwealth Theatres.
