Blue Note Theatre

The Varsity Theatre opened on October 3, 1927 with Norma Talmadge in “Camille”. It was taken over by Commonwealth Theatres in 1955 and closed around 1963. It was reopened on October 13, 1966 with “Dear John” and was renamed Film Arts Theatre. It was closed May 2, 1972.

Between 1972 and 1991 it was used for various functions such as craft shows and antique sales. In 1991 it reopened as the Blue Note Theatre, a nightclub and live performance venue.

David and Noelle Soren’s list of known Boller Brothers theaters includes the Varsity in Columbia.

In the late 1960s, the Varsity became the Film Arts Theatre, which was run by Commonwealth Theatres.

Opened as Varsity on October 3rd, 1927 and closed in 1959. It was reopened by Commonwealth as the Film Arts on June 13th, 1966. Grand opening ads posted

Amazing spot!!! Hüsker Dü played their last ever show here. Theatre is in remarkably good condition. Truly beautiful, stunning old palace
