I worked at this theater as a “doorman” from 1972 to 1976. It was a great 599 seat theater. The busiest time I remember was in August of 1973 when “American Graffiti” was released. There were patrons wrapped around the building to get in! I personally remember seeing this film over 300 times! I remember every line, and every amazing song from the film! It was part of the George M. Schwartz theater chain that included theaters in Dover, Wilmington (Branmar Plaza), and southern Delaware (The Sun, Surf, and Sand) near the beach.

When American Graffiti played, I remember the only available seats for me and 3 others were in the front row. The seat I sat in had a very slow drip (once every 10-15 minutes), that fell on my head. Prior to it’s shutdown in September 2015, Rocky Horror Picture Show was shown every Saturday at 12:01AM. This Saturday night showing was taken over by The Cinema Center after The State Theatre on Main Street, Newark closed.

Originally built as a single screen showplace by Schwartz Theaters of Dover Delaware in either the late 1960’s or the very early 1970’s. Later then carved up into three screens. I remember that when American Graffiti came out in the fall of 1973 it played at the Cinema Center for a very long time.

A new operator who also own the Westown Movies in Middletown DE will take over the theater and renamed it as the Main Street 5
