Cobham, to the south-east of Esher, Surrey, is today on the outer boundary of Greater London. The Savoy Cinema was located on Portsmouth Road, opposite Northfield Road. It opened in 1937. It had a 45 feet wide proscenium, a stage where occasional live shows were performed, and a cafe was another of its facilities. The Savoy Cinema was taken over by the Shipman & King chain in 1938.
Shipman & King were taken over by the Grade Organisation in 1967, and around 1970, the Savoy Cinema was closed. It has since been demolished and the site is now a playing field.

I remember going to this cinema as a child and seeing Mary Poppins, in fact as we were leaving my sister informed me that they would be showing it again after we had left and I cried my eyes out as I wanted to be able to watch it one more time!
This was a great place, under the same management as the Embassy, Esher further along the Portsmouth Road. Remember sitting through Summer Holiday two and a half times in one go. I used to be given the old hanging cards advertising the week’s attractions when I was taken for a haircut every Saturday, and I’m pretty sure it closed earlier than you suggest. I think the last film shown was The Hill starring Sean Connery and Harry Andrews, which was released in 1965.
Architects were William Edward Riley and Ernest Budge Garfield, opening on the Saturday of 4th July, 1936. It was built for Savoy (Cobham) Ltd.
