Blackstone Valley Visitor Center Theatre

This small screening room inside the Blackstone Valley Visitor Center is used primarily to show short historical films on continuous loop. It also plays host to the annual Pawtucket Film Festival in September and a variety of community events throughout the year. Built as the Peerless department store in 1970, the building was renovated into the Visitor Center, theater, and offices in 1999 and was renamed the Benjamin C. Chester building. Fifty of the ninety theater seats were rescued from the nearby Leroy Theater during its demolition in 1997.

Really? We’re listing tiny screening rooms that show historical films at visitor centers as cinemas now? If so, get ready for thousands more!

I agree. This listing does not belong here. I have a little screening room in my house where I show myself classic films and Netflix rentals. Shall I include that as a “cinema treasure.”

I don’t think a visitor’s center should be counted either. However, the only reason I would make an exception with this one is that it host other community events as well as a film festival for a few years. Both of those were public events, so I would count it.

Gerald – it depends on your screening room.

No, visitors centers in general shouldn’t be listed here. I added it since it does host a public film festival every year, plus the added interest that it’s equipped with seats from the Leroy and is built on the site of the Globe.
