The Kings Plaza Shopping Center became a flea market during the mid-1980’s. The flea market is where the former King’s Department Store used to be and also took over the space where the former Winn-Dixie grocer stood and former Kerr Discount Drugs.
Open in 1967 as a 700 seat single screen theater. Was twinned in 1975. The second auditorium was under renovations in 1979 to make way for a third auditorium with second auditorium split down the middle creating two shoebox auditoriums with smaller screens. Screen 1 had 450 seats. By the time the second auditorium was renovated the seating capacities for Screens 2 and 3 were between 299 or 300.
raysson – do you know what year the Kings Plaza Shopping Center became a flea market? I would be very interested to know…
Although, to add on to my remark about the 700 seats to 1 screen, I suppose if it had become a 3-screen theater by the ‘80s, whether or not that played a role would be determined by whether 1 or 2 of the 3 screens had 300+ seats, since clearly 700 is not enough for each screen to have had 300+ seats; if it was 299 or fewer per each of the 3 screens already, then that wouldn’t have played a role…
Also, one of the other closed former-Carmike Fayetteville theater pages said that Carmike had closed 3 theaters in Fayetteville, but, so far, having only reached K going alphabetically down the list, this is the 5th — 1. the Valley Twin; 2. Bordeaux; 3. Cardinal Theatres; 4. Eutaw Twin Theatres; and now 5. King Theatres…
Yes, Carmike would have acquired it as part of their acquisition of Consolidated Theaters in 1989. As I commented on another Fayetteville/Carmike theater page, the 700 seats for the 1 screen likely would have played a role in Carmike’s choosing to close it…
This was also under Carmike Cinemas when it last operated as a three-screen discount house in the late 1980’s.
Kings Plaza Shopping Center is now home to a very popular flea market that is open to the public on weekends. This is in the same location as where the former King’s Department Store, and the King Theatre used to be,not to mention the other section of the flea market was also to be a Winn-Dixie grocer.
