Hi, Is there any “post covid” interest in re-opening this great, neighborhood theater? I, personally would travel just about any distance to attend some films at my old, childhood “haunt”!
AKA Summit Quad.
At one time this theatre was known as Cine Tony.
Any up-dates on the “fate” of the Summit?
Very quiet around here for a few years!!! Is the Summit officially “dead in the water” awaiting some local contractor to take over? A true shame. I guess Union City has no need for this great little local cinema with the advent of the Secaucus and Ridgefield theaters many years ago. I still think that whoever owns this property should take a “cue” from what the FOL is doing with the great Loewe’s Jersey at Journal Square. The Friends of Loews is keeping that theater quite viable!
There is nothing on the Summit Hippodrome’s official web site but a rather cryptic message from what is probably the hosting company. Nothing is listed at web sites such as Box Office Mojo, either. I don’t think this theater is open.
Still no up-dates on the Summit web site as to new programs, films etc.???? I hope interest in this theater has not slacked off.

Is there any news regarding the renewed interest and restoration of the Summit? The web site makes no note of any activities beyond Feb. 15th. (The classic films program seems interesting.)
I am looking forward to the Summit’s restoration and renovation with much positive anticipation.
The only model that I have at the moment for this type of restoration is the great job a group of local residents known as the “Friends of the Loews” did with the Loews Jersey at Journal Square (I guess you can tell I’m a big fan of the Loews!) Monthly “classic” film programs, live shows etc. Will the Summit be operating along these lines?

Hey Folks I just wanted to let you all know that the Summit Hippodrome will be open for business February 2nd. We are working on restoring and renovating it. It will be open for some amazing events. Hi FeverDog, So sorry to hear about the closing of the Summit. This is the place where much of my “mis-spent” youth was taken up with the likes of the old Universal and Hammer horror films during the hey-days of the kiddie matinees. Even though (up until about a month ago) I used to drive past there every day, I never realized it was being “gutted”. Very sad. But, I guess there is some consolation that the great Loews Jersey at Journal Square (one of my other “haunts” as a kid) is still a functioning movie theatre and Arts Center.
It’s been a year now since this place shut down. The status neeeds to be updated. It looks like they’re starting to gut it.
Phone number is disconnected. It looks like it has closed.
This may has closed by December 29th. Showtimes are imposable to find for this cinema. It may had been closed
The Summit in Union City is still open… showing current films. But it has been sub-divided into a Tri-Plex (Yuk!) More than likely not the same theater that many of us enjoyed during the 60’s and 70’s.
One of the few theatres that still maintains the great retro atmosphere of the past is the Loew’s Jersey in Jersey City… still operational for films on a monthly basis and live shows. Worth a look.
I drove by here the other day and it looks like it’s closed. It still has a Hop poster up as now showing.
I remember quite fondly all of the great “kiddee matinees” that were presented in and around the very early 1960s at the Summit Theater.
Many of the great Universals, such as “Tarantula” and “The Creature From The Black Lagoon” were making the “re-run” circuit in theaters around this time and the Summit was probably one of the first theaters (along with the Lincoln , uptown) to show many of the films from England’s HAMMER STUDIOS… such as “The Curse of Frankenstein” and “Horror of Dracula”
But the big event had to be when the Summit presented the first run engagement of Hitchcock’s, “Psycho”!! Many of our parents were ready to lock us up after we went to see that film. Remember, it was 1960 !!
And, of course a morning of horror films and cartoons at the Summit was never quite complete without our weekly visit to Damman’s Ice Cream Parlor across the street.
A Moller organ, opus 4347, was installed in the Summit Theater in 1925.
