Yes, JRed, that was me (Kevin) along with Tim Rust. We spent a lot of time at Greenwood in the middle 1990s with UA’s Satellite Theatre Network – a forerunner of today’s National Cinemedia and Fathom Events (see the marquee shot advertising a Fathom opera event). I seem to remember someone from the Proteus Network (later renamed Satellite Theater Network) being named Kevin. There was another guy, too. Maybe his name was Tim? I was a projectionist at the theater during that time. The Youtube video in the post above was shot and posted by me. We had the big Hughes JVC projector and eventually got a Barco as well. I think at one time we had 2 Barcos plus the JCV/Hughes. I have a different video of a live UA telecast about their 401K program.
I worked for the Sattellite Theatre Network, a project begun by UA Theatres in the 1990s. The Greenwood Plaza was our laboratory as well. Here are some facts. The complex will hold 3,000 moviegoers.Two theatres with 70mm,Dolby Surround Sound,Dolby Digital sound available for select films.Each cinema will offer Cup holder armrests,When it opened in May 1992 it was Denver’s most Technically Sophisticated motion picture theatre,According to United Artist press release to BOXOFFICE July 1992.
I have heard (unconfirmed) rumors that the Greenwood Plaza 12 will be closed next year when the Hollywood theater opens in the nearby redeveloped Southglenn shopping center.
The Greenwood Plaza 12 was/is a pretty nice theater, but unfortunately as it was being built, a last-minute decision was made by someone at corporate to put in curved screens. This required relocating the auditorium exit doors and significantly reduced the overall screen size. Still , this was a great booth to work in as we got to test lots of new technologies (first in the state with SDDS, Interfilm, etc). 70mm capability exists (or at least used to) in auditoriums 4, 6 and 9.
I worked at the Continental before I helpled open the Greenwood Plaza 12 (as an assistant). After a few years there I transferred to The UA Corporate Offices. I remember that by being so close to Corprate, we were used to film the company’s Training videos. The District Offices were upstairs, just like at the continental (I wonder if District manager was following me). It had One big booth. When we oppened, I think we were one of the first Theatres, at least in Colorado, to have “(A)uto (T)icket (M)achine"s in the lobby.
This was the UA Denver flagship during the mid to late 90’s. The corp office was only a mile or so away. I worked for corp concessions during this time and almost every new idea was tested in that location. Like most megaplex’s of that day, the auditoriums have been retrofitted for stadium, but even prior it was a good place to see a show. Being so close to corp there was a strong focus on managing it correctly. The box offices were in an area protected by a wall of roll-up doors. When the weather was nice you were basically outside and could be protected from the cold or rain when the weather was bad.
