Pearl Theatre

The Pearl Theatre was the only CINERAMA theatre in Hong Kong in the 1970’s and 1980’s. It was situated in Causeway Bay on the Hong Kong Island. The theatre opened to business on 15th December 1971 with "Krakatoa, East of Java." The film was filmed with old Todd-AO cameras and lenses, and shown at the theatre as single film Cinerama. Only two CINERAMA films were shown at the Pearl Theatre, and since 1st March 1972, only ordinary format films were shown on the curve screen of the theatre.

Its ticket booth and lobby were on the shared covered terrace on the first floor of the theatre building with the adjacent Jade Theatre. Its 1,323-seat auditorium was on the first floor of the theatre building.

The theatre closed on 8th January, 1992 for refurbishment. The theatre re-opened on 13th August 1992, as a mini cinema with 374 seats on the former balcony section of the theatre, the stalls section with the one of the adjacent Jade Theatre were converted into restaurants.
It showed first-run English language and Chinese dialect films until its closure on 6th September 1998.

The Pearl Theatre with the adjacent Jade Theatre were refurbished as a new cinema with two auditoriums.

Pearl had a very wide but flat auditorium. Possibly built for its Cinerama purpose, the screen was quite high and it felt a bit weird if you took a seat at the back stall. Maybe it’s the curved screen. It was advertised as a 3-D cinema in Chinese newspaper when it opened for business. Like its neighbour Jade, Pearl’s business florished because of its prime location, right in the centre of Causeway Bay shopping district. Many Hollywood blockbusters have been shown there, including Grease, Alien, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Ghost, and Basic Instinct. Pearl, together with Palace and Lee were those cinemas for me to relax after a full-day lecture at the university.
