I’d love to know more about this theatre if anyone knows anything about it.
Remember going to this theater in the early 50’s. The price of admission was 44 cents for adults and 25 cents under 18 years of age. They had double features which also included a cartoon, world news, and a serial. There was a balcany in the rear of the theater and a stage for having live stage shows.
Paul, do you know if the building still stands or if it is demolished?
Demolished
My mother was from a 9 children Irish family that grew up on Eagle Street in “original terryville” in the 1920’s, she was born in 1926. When she was alive until her death in 1995, she would tell my two sisters and I about all the good times she had at the Mayfair theater growing up during the depression. In the mid-thirties and into the pre-WWII era right through the 50’s and 60’s,mother theater was the main attraction in that little town on the hill. She spoke of times when she would go with her sisters and brothers to watch original Tarzan and older comedies like Abbott and Costello. At that time it was 5 cents to get in! Candy was 1cent and the popcorn was 3 cents for a good size cup. She spoke of the children laughing and stomping their feet on the wooden floors during the comedies and said the foot stomping was so loud from the floors that the place shook. She told us wonderful stories about the Mayfair. How times have changed. It was a shame when they tore it down. It had so much history.
