State Theater

The State Theater was the last movie house to be opened in Sherman’s heyday of theater going and was put it into operation June 29th, 1939 by Max Burger
as the Fox Theater.

It lasted less than a year, but Lillian Walker who operated the Savage Theater and Metro Theater’s in Durant, Oklahoma gave it new life when she reopened it as the State Theater in July, 1940.

Lester Dollison bought the showplace in 1942 and sold out to Thomas Wade in 1944. Mary Spears took the theater over in 1945 and kept it open until the tube squeezed its life out in 1961.

Cowboy star Tim Holt is greeted at a 1948 personal appearance to the State Theater by Mary Spears and seems to be quiet popular with the ladies in the crowd.

Those were the days!
