Grove Theater

Opened June 7, 1950, and owned by Gordon Mclendon of Dallas and managed Joe Jones, the Grove Theater was the most plush and magnificent theater in town. A packed house was normal for the Grove Theater until it was destroyed by a spectacular blazing fire on May 28, 1959.

On June 10, 1967 the marquees were moved to the northwest corner of the square and reopened in an old saloon building. The Grove Theater #2 opened with Dean Martin in “Texas Across the River”. It later became an adult movie theatre. It reopened as a regular movie theatre and closed on October 4, 1981 with the Walt Disney animated feature “The Fox and the Hound”. It went over to live theatre use for a short while, closing in March 1982. That building became home to the Baptist Temple. Honey Grove was left with no operating theaters.

The Grove Theatre opened on June 7, 1950, as reported in the June 24 issue of Boxoffice. The house was operated by Tri-States Theatres and was designed by Dallas architect Raymond F. Smith.

Manager Joe Jones, according to Boxoffice, had gotten his first job in a theater at the Bon Ton in Honey Grove 34 years earlier.

Grove Theatre #1 opened on June 7, 1950 closing on May 29, 1959 following a theater-ending fire. The building was located on the square next to the corner building at 106 E Main Street. As of the 2020s, one wall remained from the former theater and a one-story structure took its place.

Grove Theatre #2 launched June 10, 1967 with “Texas Across the River” (ad in photos) in the northwest corner of Honey Grove’s square. Grove #2 turned to adult theater operation. It then got three new operators all trying to turn it back to a family movie theater from 1979 to 1981 with a final listed film on October 4, 1981 as Walt Disney’s “The Fox and the Hound.” The second Grove Theatre then went to live operation through March of 1982 and appears to have closed permanently. As this times out with the expiration of a 15-year leasing period, it may be accurate.
