Newton Stewart Cinema (Official)
Previous Names: Picture House, Cinema
The Picture House opened in 1933 with a seating capacity of 500. The proscenium was 28ft wide. Always independently operated. It was equipped with a British Thomson-Houston(BTH) sound system. The building was purchased by a community group and work was carried out to refurbish the cinema. By 1977, it was operating as The Cinema, with a seating capacity of 396. The operator was listed as John Forbes - Sempill.
The Cinema, which has a car park, continues successfully today, serving the population of Newton Stewart, which is near to Wigtown, in Dumfries and Galloway.
