Reopened as the Art Cinema on March 14th, 1951. Grand opening ad posted.
NO — WE ARE NOT TALKING ABOUT THE BEVERLY THEATRE! We are talking about the BLACK ROCK THEATRE — the subject of this page. These are two different theaters on two different blocks — three blocks apart. And how the hell did the HI-WAY get into this? It’s not even in Bridgeport, CT. It’s in Stratford, CT. Talk about getting confused!
Three small photos of the Black Rock Theatre can be seen on this page of Boxoffice, January 31, 1948. The house had been fitted with a new marquee by the Wagner Sign Service.
The Black Rock opened as the Orpheum and became the Black Rock around 1930. It became the art Cinema on March 14, 1951 and closed on July 7, 1957 and was demolished. The Beverly opened on October 26, 1949. It was the only new theatre to open in Bridgeport after World War II until the Showcase multiplex opened around 1995.
I just discovered on Cinematour.com that the address of the BEVERLY was: 3029 Fairfield Avenue, so either the addresses changed through the years, or these are two different theaters. Also, FYI, the BEVERLY opened in 1949. I recall it showing movies through the eighties.
Are you talking about the BEVERLY? That was the only name I knew this theater by. In the fifties the HI-WAY and BEVERLY were always linked, even though they were miles apart, always showing the same show.
During the 50’s the Black Rock Theatre was known as the Art Cinema.
