Regal closed its Timberlyne March 17, 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. Regal/Cineworld reopened some locations but the Timberlyne could not due to governmental ordinances.

When Regal/Cineworld suspended operations in October 8, 2020, it then made the closure of its Timberlyne permanent. As noted above, the addition of the 13-screen Silverspot CInemas at the mall known as University Place that opened October 23, 2015 made the Timberlyne more expendable to Regal. The space would be repurposed as a medical office. The Regal Timberlyne was one of many theaters to be closed permanently during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The days of this theater may be numbered. This theater is over 20 years old and it faces stiff competition from nearby Chelsea(an art-house cinema), and Durham’s Wynnsong 15 which under Carmike Cinemas, also over 20 years old,not to mention competition from Chapel Hill’s only Downtown theater,The Varsity on East Franklin Street. Back here in November,2014 GATES construction began demolishing the former Dillard’s Department Store at University Mall and started construction of the 67,000 square foot movie theater that will have 13-screens and will have a seating capacity of 1,500 with luxury seats scheduled to open in late-October or early-December of 2015 or earlier as scheduled under Silverspot Cinemas Corporation.

The new multiplex may have a greater impact on the Chelsea Theatre which is across the street over at Timberlyne Shopping Center off Weaver Dairy Road. Not to mention in the article(11-19-13 Raleigh News and Observer) that this multiplex will play its share of independent and foreign films that usually get first-billing at the Chelsea.

But since you were saying that this theater’s days are numbered, the Timberlyne 6 opened in 1993 and it is over 20 years old.

The days of this theater may be numbered. Newsobserver.com announced on November 19, 2013 that a new 13-screen multiplex will be built at University Mall, on the site of the soon to close Dillard’s Department Store. The new multiplex may have less impact on the Lumina Theatre, as that fiveplex is further away from University Mall than the Timberlyne 6.

What a horrible way to open a new theatre….. Pauly Shore in “THE SON-IN-LAW”

A lot of people avoided this turkey and flock over to the larger auditorium where JURASSIC PARK was packing them in and keeping the lines going around the block.
