Opened on 11th December 1995, the new Apollo 5 Cinema replaced the old Apollo Cinema in this seaside town, which had originally opened as the Odeon (That building continues today as a bingo club and has its own page on Cinema Treasures).
The Apollo 5 Cinema is located at West Parade on the Promenade. It has 5 air-conditioned screens which are equipped with Dolby DTS and Dolby Digital Surround Sound. Seating capacities in the screens are: 208, 208, 119, 109 and 109.
In late-2014 it was taken over by Vue Cinemas. They closed it on 19th January 2025 when they didn’t renew the lease. In June 2025 it was announced that Merlin Cinemas chain would be reopening the cinema. It reopened as the Strand Cinema on 19th December 2025.

Sadly this cinema closed 19th January 2025 after Vue decided not to renew its lease.
The Local Council paid for the 35mm Projection Equipment when it opened.
Merlin Cinemas has announced that they will take over the cinema
Good news! The cinema has re-opened! Called Strand Cinemas, operated by Merlin Cinemas. I’ve uploaded a few pictures. Sadly, the auditorium ones that I took came out too dark to use.
