The opening date is unknown, but the Cinema is listed as operating in 1934, with 450 seats. The Cinema continued through to the late-1960’s at least.
In 1980 it was operated by the local Council and had been re-named Studio Cinema, with a seating capacity of 252. It was refurbished in 1994 and has been re-named Theatr Gwuan. It now screens first run films and stages live theatre performances.

I believe that this is probably the Palace Cinema that I knew in the 1960s. At that time it had two GB Kalee 11 Arcs with open heads. The box was quite small but beautifully maintained. One unusual feature being that the cinema always showed the main feature first and the second feature last followed by the adverts. The cause being the early departure of country bus services. Another feature of the box was the electric reel rewind system that had been manufactured by a long serving projectionist.Lighting was limited to a house light off and on switch.
I was operating at this cinema on the night that John F. Kennedy was shot. The announcement of the confirmation of death was made during the break following the first feature. Most of the audience were in tears. We showed the second feature some ten minutes late but few stayed to watch it.
Just viewed Theatr Gwaun on Google Street, and was wondering from the design of it if it started life as a chapel? The projection room was obviously added on later, also is the fire escape from the box the only access into it. I’ve seen on the Welsh news that council funding is to cease shortly, but nice to see that volunteers want to keep it going.
Just had a look in my book ‘The Kinematograph Year Book’ for 1958, and Theatr Gwaun is listed as The Cinema (Westerb Electric) sound. proprietors Williams Bros, 3, Main street.
I operated at this box several times in the early 1960s. I can confirm that at that time there was an interior access to the box.
