The Colony Theatre was designed by architect Erle G. Stillwell. DocSouth’s “Going to the Show” section has some of Stillwell’s plans and drawings of the Colony linked from this web page.
Iused to go to the colony every sat in the early and late 60’s oh what fun, wish we all could go back one day to the past
There was also located in Downtown Fayetteville another large movie theater called THE MIRACLE too right there on Hay Street. At that time, there was three moviehouses in the greater Downtown Fayetteville area..ALL on Hay Street….. THE CAROLINA
THE COLONY
THE MIRACLE
It was showing John Wayne to large crowds in “BLOOD ALLEY” on Nov.1 1955.
Theatre was located at 329 Hay Street and opened 28 July 1941.It closed in 1976 and was demolished in October 2005.
This was a rather large streamline moderne house built around 1940. It was later joined by the Miracle Theater, which was one building down. The Colony was abandoned in the 1970s and finally torn down around 2006 after part of it collapsed during an attempted renovation for condos.
