Sterling Cinema

The August 3, 1970 publication of Boxoffice carried this story under the heading of “WASHINGTON [DC]” on page 18:

‘Cinecom Corp. has opened its second new theatre in the area. It is the Sterling Cinema, a 500-seater, in Virginia’s Sterling Park Shopping Mall in the vicinity of Dulles Airport. Its July 29 opening was a Wednesday matinee showing of "Kelly’s Heroes," to be followed by "Paint Your Wagon." then "The Boatniks." according to Frank Welton of Cinecom’s New York office.’

After closing its doors, the lobby was used in the early-1980’s as a video game arcade, while the seating area was a carpet store. From about 1983 to 1989, my parents and I ran a videotape rental store in the lobby area. I believe a sporting goods store used the space after we vacated. It is now a laser tag venue.

The Sterling Park Cinema’s address is 421 South Sterling Blvd, Sterling, VA 20164. The architectural firm which designed it was Walton and Associates. Here are January 2009 photos of what remains of the cinema: 1, 2, 3

This is so cool. I have been in there so many times playing the Laser tag. I never knew that it used to be a movie theater inside.

The owner used to let our band practice and play there in-between movies sometimes back in the 70’s..
