The Esplanade 6 Cinemas was opened by the Famous Players chain on December 21, 1990. The smallest auditorium has 194 seats and the largest 348 seats.
Empire Theatres took over in September 2005. They featured a ‘Real Deal Tuesday’, when prices were almost half price. It was taken over by Landmark Cinemas in 2013. It was closed in September 2016. It was taken over by Cineplex Cinemas in October 2016. It was closed on April 2, 2019. It was demolished in early-2021 and sadly during demolition one person was killed.

Closing on April 2nd, 2019 as a newer Cineplex location is opening nearby at Park Royal Mall in West Vancouver.

Appears they did nothing during the 2016 transition. Seats were the same and the place looked rather shabby. Got to see a show here “ The Beach Bum ” as a send off earlier this year.
Construction fencing is up, demolition is imminent.

I am beyond overdue to post my photo gallery of this location and PROMISE I will get to it soon. I have pictures of all six theaters, both lobbies and many other areas of the theater when taken on the closing weekend of this location.

This cinema opened on December 21, 1990. Its opening films include The Bonfire of the Vanities, The Russia House, Three Men and a Little Lady, The Rookie, Look Who’s Talking Too, and Ghost. Cineplex Entertainment closed it on April 2, 2019, with its final films including Dumbo (also in 3D), The Beach Bum, The Hummingbird Project, Captain Marvel (also in 3D), How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (also in 3D), and Everybody Knows. They closed it as operations moved to Cineplex Park Royal & VIP in West Vancouver.
According to the CBC article from 2021 and as shown in current Google Maps street views, the Esplanade Cinemas has been demolished for an apartment building, so its status should be changed to Demolished. Mention should also be made of what happened in the partial collapse of the former theatre during demolition work on the theatre at that time.
On February 28, 1997, the Esplanade 6 Cinemas became worldwide headlines following the killing of Mohammed Mirhadi, a 21-year-old Hong Kong native, karate expert, martial-arts devotee, and member of the Persian Pride gang, who was fatally shot towards the end of a screening of “Donnie Brasco” and died from inside the auditorium a few minutes later. Witnesses saw two men running for the exit. RCMP officers confirmed that a total of three and five shots were fired from a 9mm semi-automatic handgun at close range. The incident was SO massive in British Columbia that it became front page headlines for several days after the shooting.
This was in connection of the then-skyrocketing violence against men and members of the Persian Pride gang. It was also connection of another incident, where another man, 20-year-old Mani Razaei was shot in the head after a Vancouver warehouse party in December 1996.
