Quad Cinema

The Quad Cinema opened on 28th September 2008. This purpose built cinema is the new home to the former Metro Cinema which operated on Green Lane from 1981 at the Derby Central School of Art building. In January 2007 it moved to a temporary home at the University of Derby, Heap Lecture Theatre and closed at that venue in late-Summer-2008.

The new Quad Cinema is located in Derby city centre on the edge of the Market Place. Seating capacities in the 2-screens are;230 and 128 + a small ‘box screen’.

The Quad has a third auditorium, known as The Box, which is a fully flexible space. In my photographs, it’s the auditorium with Daleks on the screen!

In May 2017, five months after his death, Screen 1 was renamed the Sir John Hurt Cinema. The Derbyshire-born actor had been a patron at QUAD. And Screen 2 is now RDS Cinema, in recognition of one of QUAD’s sponsors, Responsive Digital Solutions.

Architect for the building was Feildon Clegg Bradley of Bath. The QUAD & Cinema was amongst the first building constructions undertaken under Derby Cityscape, the urban regeneration scheme company that guides the rejuvenation of the city centre.
