The Gayety Theater was advertised in the 1925 Los Angeles city directory. Sometimes advertised as the Gaiety Theater, it was listed in editions of Film Daily yearbook 1930 thru to 1933 as a Negro theatre. According to the memoirs of Verna Williams (born in 1906), held by the Los Angeles Public Library: “The Gayety Theater was owned by a Japanese man in the 1920’s, he fired the white ticket seller and hired a light skinned black (who could be mistaken for white) though the interview states he was looking for a colored ticket seller”. Verna Williams worked at the Gayety Theater, and also at the nearby Lincoln Theater and the Tivoli Theater.
The 1941 edition of F.D.Y. lists it as (Closed).

Also listed as the Gayety in the 1915 City Directory. This theater would have been almost across the street from the Lincoln Theatre.
Doug’s Furniture Store is currently at 2415 – could be the theatre building.
The L.A. County Assessor says that the building at 2415 S. Central was built in 1953. The project north of it, which has a parking lot where the Gayety Theatre was, is even newer, having been built in 1989. The Gayety is gone.
