Closed as York in 1985.
Reopened as York on November 7th, 1970. Grand opening ad posted.
Reopened as Mountain on December 13th, 1943 and operated by 20th Century theatres 1945-1948 when it closed. It reopened on May 29th, 1949 under new management.

The Lyceum theatre opened on November 22nd, 1919. Grand opening ad posted.
The Music Palace is no longer operating. As of the last weekend in October 2013, the theater had a “closing sale”. An article in the newspaper (The Spectator) related that new owners bought the building for $900,000 and have renamed the building The Zoetic. The new owners are “turning the historic theatre into a multipurpose entertainment centre”. The theatre reopened New Year’s Eve with a 1920’s-theme celebration and show.
The comment by Chuck1231 got me wondering. I called the Concession Street Business Association and asked about the Mountain Theatre. The theater is now officially called the Music Palace. It is under new management and is still being used as a live performance venue. Their web site is: musicpalace.ca. I was told they have been operating as the Music Palace for six months. The web site advertises future performances as well as a brief history, technical stats of the equipment and venue and a gallery of performance photos. Check it out.
The internet venture, related in the April 29th comment, has failed. The theatre has been leased and will continue presenting live entertainment, etc. The Mountain Theatre name and web site remain the same.

The theater has been leased by Mark Ironside and is being used as an internet television studio. It has officially been renamed the Mountain Theatre. My brothers and I went to many Saturday afternoon “mats” at the Mountain Theatre, black and white Batman, The Untouchables, 3 Stooges, Spanky and Our Gang, Topo Gigo, True Grit.
According to their website,tonight will be their last showings.
Very interesting interior views (their website is still up) – looks like the audirotium was redone in a new, but classical looking motif. Seating looks like modernist-style church pews. The place looks in great shape and could easily be reopened as a performing arts venue or church.
I remember attending this cinema in 1979 to see the theatrical release of the BATTLESTAR GALACTICA film. It was called the York at the time.
It was used as a sports store in the 1990’s, with the seats still in the auditorium. I remember seeing bicycles propped up in the aisles.
I have seen a few films now in the remodeled interior and have been impressed with the atmosphere.

This classic theater was built in the 1920’s as the Lyceum Theater, but in 1940’s the name was changed to The Mountain, then in the 1970’s the name was changed again to the York. Just last year I found out there was two York theaters in Hamilton. One was located in Downtown Hamilton on York Blvd and when It closed in the 1970’s it moved to a new location on the Hamilton Mountain which is now called The Movie Palace.
