The Galena Theatre opened on March 7th, 1950. Grand opening ad posted.
jamestv, I enjoyed receiving your information about “The Brass Bottle”. I stand corrected on Tony Randall instead of Tony Curtis having a starring role and I now remember everyone else you have mentioned; who were in it. All great actors and actresses. I remember that “The Brass Bottle” was shown first at the Loews State Theatre in downtown Houston; before being shown at any other local area theatres. The Galena had a good size crowd that evening and I remember there were several ushers around.
“The Brass Bottle” was released in 1964 starring Tony Randall, Barbara Eden and Burl Ives as the genie of the bottle. Interestingly, the following year, Barbara Eden would get her own brass bottle as Jeannie in the hit series “I Dream Of Jeannie”.
I appreciate your information. My Dad took my two sisters and I there once on a Saturday night when I was in 6th. grade. The movie was: “The Brass Bottle” starring I believe; Tony Curtis. I don’t remember who else was in it.
I grew up in Deer Park, Texas during the early 1950’s and left the Houston, Texas area during the latter 1980’s. Went back to Deer Park and lived there again between 2006 – 2008. I remember the Galena Theatre and it is now a church. I don’t remember the Midway. I don’t remember the Galena closing during 1964, but it closed during the very early 1970’s. For awhile; it was an indoor Flea Market. During the latter 1960’s; it was renamed the GEM.
