Skyway Drive-In

The Skyway Drive-In was located on North Broadway in Fountain City. It opened on July 26, 1948 with Dick Haymes in “Do You Love Me”. It was managed by ABC Theatres in the early-1970’s. It closed in 1973 before the Knoxville Drive-In, Family Drive-In, and Cinema Drive-In (also managed by ABC) closed. It closed before I was ever able to go to a movie there, but I did drive by it while it was still open.

As I remember, it was on the left side of Broadway NE just north of Fountain City, as you are headed towards hills. I remember it being a very plain looking drive-in that seemed to be located in the middle of a field pretty far back from the highway with a very long driveway. There seemed to be nothing else much around it at the time.

The screen stayed up for at least a few years after it closed and the site is a trailer park at the location now.

I checked the 6517 Maynardville Hwy address and it puts you out in the county.

The address is: 6517 Maynardville Pike, Knoxville, TN 37918 It makes a big drifference.

Thanks for the correction. I have always called that section Maynardville Hwy, but it doesn’t become “Highway” until it crosses the Knox/Union County line.

The Skyway was on Maynardville Pike which is what Broadway becomes after you leave the Knoxville city limits. The location is in the unincorporated community of Halls Crossroads. I have set the streetview to the correct location. It shows the original driveway which is now the entrance to the trailer park that sits on the spot where the drive-in was. You can take the streetview up Mynatt Road which runs along the south side of the property, and still see the old metal fencing that was around the drive-in.

The last add in the newspaper that I can find was in September 1973, so I would assume that it closed for good after the 1973 season.

The correct address is 6517 Maynardville Pike, Knoxville, TN 37918
