Rodeo Arthouse Cinema

The American Theatre was opened in 1924. In 1931 it was renamed Blue Moon Theatre. In 1942 it was renamed Rodeo Theatre. It closed January 31, 1953 with Sterling Hayden in “Hellgate” & Judy Canova in “The WAC From Walla Walla”. It was reopened later in 1953 and finally closed around 1968.

The theatre was used as an antique mall and art gallery. It then became a live music venue known as the Rodeo Opry. In September 2017 it was announced by the operators of Circle Cinema that it would reopen by the end of 2017 as the Rodeo Cinema with 2,950 seats. The ‘live’ Rodeo Opry was continue on Saturday evenings.

It opened as the Rodeo Cinema on August 24, 2018 with Kelly MacDonald in “Puzzle” and the Documentary “Lives Well Lived”. There are plans to build two more screens in 2019, each with seating for 125.

This one’s down on Agnew St in Cowtown. It sits across the street from Langston’s in OKC, if that helps. I don’t know the address.

Did the new owners retain those wonderful abstract rodeo cowboy auditorium wall murals?

If one uses the map feature at the top of this page, be advised the satellite image pinpoints the Rodeo Theater three blocks West of its actual location. Also on the same block can be seen the former Blue Moon Theater, a few doors East of the Rodeo.

Perhaps the map feature does pinpoint the correct address listed here. Could it be that the Rodeo Theatre address on this site was given incorrectly?

Unless it soldiered on as a purely neighborhood theater with no newspaper advertising, the Rodeo’s earlier incarnation closed on Saturday, January 31, 1953, with Sterling Hayden in HELLGATE and radio comedienne Judy Canova in THE WAC FROM WALLA WALLA. [Daily Oklahoman]

The Rodeo Theater did not close in 1953. My father, Choc Hudson, bought the theater that year and ran it until around 1968.
The next owner went out of business within a year.
