Don’t know when this happened, but as of 2019, AMC has turned the Southpoint 17 into a dine-in movie complex with the new name “AMC Dine-In Southpoint 17.” It says so on their website.

The addition of the IMAX auditorium opened on May 20,2011 under Stone Theatres Group with a seating capacity of 358 for its grand opening feature with Johnny Depp in PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN:ON STRANGER TIDES
FYI: The IMAX screen was built under the STONE THEATRES ownership, not Rave. Rave took over in January 2012. And the IMAX seats 358, not 450.
Edward Havens: The IMAX addition when it opened on May 20,2011 was under then Charlotte-based Stone Theatres. By December of 2011,Stone Theatres was gone and Rave Cinemas took over the Soutnpoint Mall Cinemas' operations. Rave Cinemas took over Southpoint in January of 2012 and was acquired by AMC Theatres on January 18,2013 when AMC acquired this theatre along with nine other cinemas that were under Rave Cinemas.
THEATRE HISTORY OF THE SOUTHPOINT MALL CINEMAS:
2002-2008 Consolidated Theatres Group
2008-2012 Stone Theatres Group
2012-2013 Rave Cinemas
2013-Present AMC Theatres (American Multi-Cinemas)
As of January 18,2013, the Southpoint Mall Cinemas and IMAX has been acquired by AMC Theatres(American Multi-Cinemas)….the theatre has been listed as having 16 screens, but instead has a 450 seat IMAX theatre so that would make it 17 screens. This is AMC Theatres' first operation in the greater Triangle area. More information is on this website: www.amctheatres.com/movie-theatres/amc-southpoint17
This location is being acquired by AMC along with 9 other Rave locations. As for a “30-plex” being built somewhere else nobody builds them anymore – not profitable.
Edwards is part of Regal Entertainment Group (REG). If REG acquires the Southpoint it would operate under the Regal name, not Edwards; Edwards is used by REG mostly on the West Coast. All REG theatres in North Carolina have operated under the Regal nameplate since the UA Garner Towne Square 10 was sold off to Carolina Cinemas. Oddly, the Southpoint 16 was one of several theatres Regal was forced to sell off as part of the Consolidated takeover (Raleigh Grande 16 and UA Garner Towne Square 10 were among the others).
If AMC does get the Southpoint 16 and builds a theater at Triangle Town Center, it may be the straw that breaks Carmike’s back in the Triangle. After AMC built North Carolina’s first stadium-style multiplexes in Charlotte, Carmike got out of the Charlotte area soon after. It seems to me that AMC and Carmike cannot co-exist in the same market, at least in North Carolina (AMC sold the Carolina Circle 6 to Carmike and left Greensboro). Ironically, when Triangle Town Center was under construction the developers announced that Carmike would build a multiplex at their mall (nothing came out of that proposal)
Nighthawk1: I heard about this too. Now that Rave Cinemas is selling off all of it’s theaters, AMC (American Multi-Cinemas) is set to take over Southpoint Cinemas…which will mark AMC Theatres first venue in the greater Triangle area[AMC Theatres operates three multiplexes in the greater Charlotte area……AMC also was a strong foothold when they opened the Carolina Circle Cinemas in 1976 the first AMC chain in the Carolinas]……AMC is set to open a huge megaplex cinema (30 screens)located in North Raleigh by Triangle Towne Center come mid-2013.
Other chains are interested in Southpoint Mall Cinemas too….Rumor has it that Carmike is set to take over and so is Regal Cinemas.
And if that happens..be ready….Southpoint Mall Cinemas in Durham is the only multiplex in the greater Triangle that has Tuesday Bargain Night where all shows all day are just five bucks….not to mention it’s showing of classic Hollywood movies on Tuesdays (from the 1930’s to the mid-1950’s)will be discontinued…..And Nighthawk 1…this isn’t anywhere else but here in Durham. Check the Rave Cinemas website.
Rave Cinemas is now selling off all of its theaters; Southpoint Cinemas may find itself with yet another owner within the same year.
According to the Southpoint Cinema’s ad in the March 2 issue of the Raleigh News & Observer, they are now owned by Rave Cinemas (the ad lists the Rave Cinemas website).
Southpoint Cinemas was designed by the Charlotte, NC, architectural firm ADW Architects.
If it is anything like the IMAX here at the Regal 20.it is a joke.
Very nice looking theatre.
The IMAX Experience at Southpoint Mall Cinemas will open on Friday May 20, 2011 with the opening attraction of “Pirates of the Caribbean:On Stranger Tides” with Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz.
