The State Theatre opened in 1936 with 500 seats. In August 2008 it was closed and for sale. By 2014 it had fallen into a state of disrepair and was purchased by Alley A Realty a family business who speciase in historic preservation and redevelopment. On July 30, 2016 a relighting ceremony of the marquee & sign was held, frawing a huge crows of onlookers. In October 2019 renovations are well under way and it will reopen as Ely’s Historic State Theater with a reduced seating capacity of 300. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
