Capitol Theatre, Hancock, NY

Built in 1910 as the Oddfellows Hall, by 1930 it was known as the Hancock Opera House and was screening movies.

In April 1939 it underwent remodeling and was renamed Capitol Theatre.

From the 1930’s until the mid-1960’s, the Capitol Theatre was run by Eva English and H.D. English, Jr. as the sole link in the H.D. English theater chain of Harden Theatres Inc. chain. The Capitol Theatre hosted live performances by the Old Capitol Theater Players. It was closed by 2011 and the building is now a bakery/coffee shop.

The Old Capitol Theater is a great place to catch wonderful shows by The Little Victory Players.
You can even catch bands and even an Elvis Tribute artist appearance in the summer season.
Hancock NY is fortunate to have live theater right there in town!

Sadly, this theater status needs to be changed to CLOSED. I passed through this town last week. The cashier at the bakery across the street (which is really good btw) told me that it closed a few weeks ago after the owner kicked the theater company out for not being able to pay the rent. You can tell this theater dates back to 1910. But I couldn’t really tell that it retained very much of it original ornamentation if indeed it had some. It did not have seats. The town is kind of sad. I hope whatever business winds up taking it over keeps what little is left of the architectural legacy of this historic building.

As was pointed out years ago, this needs to be changed to closed. By 2011, the ugly wood paneling on the ground floor had been removed, and the ‘Old’ dropped from the name. The 2015 streetview shows this as a bakery/coffee shop.
