Actually, The Opening Year Is Wrong. The St. Albans Drive-In Began Constructing In 1948. The Correct Grand Opening Day Came A Year Ahead, As The Theater Opened Its Gates For The First Time On July 8, 1949 With A Double Feature, Errol Flynn In “Silver River” And Leo Gorcey In “Angels Alley”, Along With A Few Other Selected Short Subjects.

Interesting to note, all the talk about Wal-Mart above? They DID build one…directly across the street from this Drive-In.

“After almost three years, the screen at the former St. Albans Drive-In will be coming down.

Handy Buick GMC has purchased 11 acres — approximately half of the lot — and will be taking down the screen soon, according to co-owner Dave Handy."

Visited there in July of 2014. Ghosts, even during the daytime. Never saw a movie at this drive-in, but memories of the drive-in experiences of my youth brought back wistful memories. Check my post for 202 Drive-In, West Chester, PA.

Their website is still up but as mentioned it states that it was not open in 2014.

And yes, despite any negative opinion one might have about Walmart, it was needed. There was absolutely nothing (NO. THING.) in the vicinity once Ames closed, unless you wanted to drive to Walmart in Williston (33 miles), Walmart in Cowansville, QC (38 miles) or Walmart or Target in Plattsburgh (54 miles).

It opened in 1948, not 1959. And it ain’t opening any more.

They could not or would not invest in digital projection equipment.

Another Walmart? Maybe the area needs it.

Unfortunately looks like the land this theater sits on is on the market(probably due to the impending Wal-Mart invasion). If the theater dies, that will be a shame. View link
