Corona Super Cinema

The Corona Super Cinema was built by Stretford based builder John Maunder for his daughter. It opened as a talkie cinema on 16th November 1929, and was equipped for sound films (Western Electric equipment). It had a corner entrance, faced in white stone. There was a name sign mounted on the auditorium roof, attached to the air vent. The cinema was equipped with a small 6 feet deep stage, two dressing rooms and a 20 feet wide proscenium. Always independently operated it closed in 1951 and was purchased by Metropolitan Vickers who proposed to convert the building into a theatre for their dramatic society, but that never came to fruition. It became a small electronics manufacturing facility and was later demolished with the site becoming a car park for the Metro Sports & Social Club.
