The Jack Nicholson-Faye Dunaway thriller CHINATOWN was one of the many Exclusive Engagements that General Cinema Theatres had for the Southpark Cinema I & II. The film was an exclusive showing that opened on June 28,1974 to capacity crowds.

Its funny you see larger cities, but if they don’t have a local like me to provide pictures its a bummer.loooks like Charlotte lacks that…Augusta does not or nearby towns to Augusta,.

SPLITING theatres was just a bad call. GCC was a good company to work for, the guys I worked with made me realize the downfall of the company was from the top not the theatre managers..

THE SOUTHPARK MALL CINEMAS or CINEMA I & II Under General Cinema Corporation opened on August 21,1970 with a seating capacity of 800(400 seats each in both auditoriums)as a twin cinema. The second auditorium was split down the middle to add a third auditorium later on during the mid-1970’s that had a seating capacity of 300. It closed in 1999.

Wow, It is a small world.I worked at GCC in Augusta and Athens as an Assistant and enjoyed my times with the late Craig Zacker as my manager. I had been in the business probably longer than Zacker having worked at ABC and Plitt theatres. They wanted me to go to Columbia to help out there at the Mall theatre, but didn’t care about it and stayed in Augusta. Of all my Disrict Managers David and Mr.Biggs with ABC/PLitt were the nicest men to serve under, even as an assistant I felt welcomed when he came to town.Hope Mr.Poland is doing okay.

I wonder if Patricia Poland is related to Dave Poland our District Manager with GCC in the 80’s?

Opened in 1970 as a twin cinema under the name Southpark Mall Cinema 1 & 2. It wasn’t under the mid to late 1970’s that a third screen was added and it remain that way until the late 1990’s when it closed its doors forever.

The theatre was built on the back side of the Southpark Mall on the strip shopping center where on one side had several retail shops and was anchored in the middle by a grocery store(Colonial Stores, and later on Big Star before it was acquired by Harris-Teeter in the 80’s). The Southpark Mall Cinemas was on the other side of it across from the Sears Department Store. It was part of the General Cinema chain of theatres that also owned and operated the Charlottetowne Mall Cinemas, and Eastland Mall Cinemas. It started as a twin cinema, and a third auditorium was added on later in the latter part of the early to mid-1970’s. It did great business until its last picture show in the late 1990’s when the Phillips Place Cinemas was built across the street from Southpark Mall.
