Located in Church Crookham, Hampshire. The Queen Elizabeth Barracks was built in 1938, originally named Boyce Barracks and was used as a Depot for the Royal Army Medical Corps. It was re-named Queen Elizabeth Barracks in 1948 after Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother came to visit.

The barracks could accommodate 2,500 men and was equipped with a gymnasium and a cinema which was named the Globe Cinema, operated by the Army Kinema Corporation. Last used by the Brigade of Gurkha’s, after the army moved out in August 2000, the site was sold by the Ministry of Defence to Bryant Homes for housing development. The Globe Cinema was then opened to the general public, but it was demolished in 2012 for housing.

Although I can’t be sure, I understand the Globe Cinema has closed even to the general public.

As a SKC cinema it wasn’t one of the best. Many of the former AKC venues were very much a make do affair, though there were many formidible SKC cinemas purpose built over seas.

My last visit to the Globe was several years ago when it still served the military community. Back then it was a polished but cold environment, similar to the dormitory.
