Panorama of the Foyer

Located in Dicken World, Chatham, Kent and based in the Chatham Dockside Retail Park. Opened on 20th October 2006, the Odeon Chatham is a modern 9-screen multiplex cinema. It was originally built by the owner of the adjacent Dickens World attraction, the cinema was franchised by Odeon, who eventually purchased the building from Dickens World in 2013.

Intended to open with a fully digital projection suite, the cinema was instead equipped with traditional 35mm projectors. The large open foyer boasted a box office, refreshment counter and an automatic ticket machine. All auditoriums feature stadium seating, rather than the traditional ‘raked’ style.

In October 2010, the first digital 3D projector was installed in screen 5, the first digital & 3D film to play at Chatham was “Despicable Me”. The following year a second digital projector was installed in screen 4.

After June 2013 when Odeon fully took over the building, it underwent a full upgrade to digital projection equipment. Ironically the last 35mm film to be shown as the Odeon was “This is the End” on 10th July. The cinema was fully digital the following day. On 12th September 2013, the last full-time chief projectionist in the Odeon left the building, and projection duties were handed over to the cinema management team. Odeon Cinemas are now a fully digital projection chain.

In the summer of 2013 five state-of-the-art automatic ticket machines were installed in the foyer, which allow guests to select their own seats when purchasing tickets. These replaced the ageing single machine, which would regularly break down during busy periods.

In early-2014, screens 4 & 5 (the joint largest screens) underwent a full seating refurbishment, replacing the older tip-up seats with fixed base seats, including a selection of ‘Premier’ seating in the centre block.

The next major change came in September 2014, when the box office sold its last tickets. On 26th September 2014, the box office was removed, and construction began on a new Costa Coffee shop. Construction lasted a month, and the new coffee shop opened with a free coffee event at the end of October 2014. Cinema visitor would now purchase their tickets from the main refreshment stand, which has been altered to allow installation of additional till points, or from one of the ticket machines in the foyer. Whilst the Cost Coffee shop was being built, screens 2, 6 & 7 underwent a refurbishment, which saw the addition of ‘Premier’ seating being installed.

Auditorium capacities are: Screen 1:109, Screen 2: 222, Screen 3: 173, Screen 4: 286, Screen 5: 286 (since summer 2019 an IMAX screen with 120 recliner seats), Screen 6: 262, Screen 7: 262, Screen 8: 164 and Screen 9: 164.

That is correct, the IMAX screen was installed in screen 5, I believe in 2018 or 2019.

The IMAX screen will have been installed Summer 2019 onwards according to this article.

Screen 5: IMAX has an estimated screen width of ~48 feet or 14.63m based on the auditorium width of 52 feet. All seats (120) are recliners plus two disability spaces.

One of the very few IMAX screens in the UK that has recliner seats throughout. Odeon, Swiss Cottage being another.
