Birmingham IMAX at Millennium Point in April 2007

Located in the east of Birmingham city centre in the Millennium Point arts and entertainment complex. The 385-seat IMAX Millenium Point-Birmingham opened on 29th September 2001 and the Millenium Point had its official opening on 2nd July 2002 when Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II declared the centre open. It was equipped to screen 2D and 3D films in the IMAX format and the IMAX company were granted a 10-years lease.

The IMAX cinema initially failed to attract the required number of visitors and was closed on 30th December 2003. It was mothballed in the hope that it could be re-opened in the future and by 2008, this had occurred. When the 10-years lease ran out, IMAX didn’t renew it. The IMAX screen was removed and was replaced by a smaller one measuring 70ft x 41ft which was installed through the roof of the auditorium. Barco digital projectors, paired with Dolby Digital 3D technology were fitted, along with a major upgrade to the 15,000W sound system.

This new independent operation opened in October 2011 and it was re-named Giant Screen at Millennium Point. It closed on 5th January 2015 with “The Hobbit:The Battle of the Five Armies”.

It has reopened as the Auditorium at Millenium Point which can now be used as a live stage venue as well as movies (which only get occasional use). A screening of “Ghostbusters” took place at Halloween in 2020 and it was also used for screenings at the Birmingham Film Festival in December 2023. There may well be other screenings in recent years.

This cinema re-opened a few months after the closure detailed above. Its revised policy of showing full length features in the IMAX format seems to have been successful. See http://www.imax.ac/ (official site).
