Located in Hugh Town on the island of St. Mary’s, Isles of Scilly, which are off the coast of Cornwall. The building was originally an old chapel, which was hope to be converted into a cinema in the late 1930’s, but due to the outbreak of war, this didn’t happen until 1943.
Serving a population of around 2,000, a 35mm projector was acquired from a bombed-out cinema in England and the first film shown was "Spring Parade" starring Deanna Durbin. In 1948/49 a larger screen and orange satin screen curtains were installed and the building was re-named Plaza Cinema.
It closed in 1963, but was re-opened in June 1963 by Isles of Scilly Enterprises. The Plaza Cinema closed in 1967.

My new husband and I visited this charming cinema in April 1963 on our honeymoon. We saw the first James Bond film Dr No there. Lighting in the cinema was from gas lamps lit before the showing by a member of staff with a taper. It was a memorable evening. Last year we celebrated our golden wedding anniversary.
