Le Jeune Drive-In

This once very popular drive-in was near the Miami International Airport main entrance. It was complimented by a local Dairy Queen and the Jamaica Inn cupcake drive-ins. The Le Jeune Park Auto Theatre was opened on May 25, 1950 withRuth Roman in “Barricade”. It operated into the mid-1970’s. This was usually a first-run double feature theatre.

The above address will map accurately to the location of the drive-in. The address currently in the heading is off by almost 4 miles to the northeast.

Here is a 1969 high resolution aerial photo of the drive-in, courtesy of Earth Explorer and USGS.

The map above doesn’t seem to be any where near LeJeune Road.

Correction: NY is correct. It is Avenue, not Street. They both exist in this city.

As a teenager went here a lot in the mid 60’s. With girl friends and never saw much of the movie and hiding friends in the trunk to avoid paying. Great times

It was opened on May 25, 1950 by the Bernstein Theater Circuit. The first movie to play there was called Barricade, with Ruth Roman, Dane Clark, and Raymond Massey.

Why the name Le Jeune? The name sounds French?

42nd Street is also Le Jeune Road, named after a Belgian developer who once owned most of the land around it.

The Oct. 7, 1950 issue of Boxoffice included a full page on the Le Jeune, focusing on the raised stage under the screen. It also mentioned that the drive-in’s capacity was 800 cars.
