This twin screen theater located at Rollins Road and Route 83, in the Round Lake Plaza, was a free-standing theater that opened March 25, 1977. From September 14, 1988 it was home to second run movies and dollar shows. It’s small lobby and small theater size attracted few people from this rural community. It was closed on October 28, 1990 with Tom Cruise in “Days of Thunder” in Screen 1, and Walt Disney’s “DuckTales the Movie:Tales of the Lost Lamp” & Richard Gere in “Pretty Woman” in Screen 2.

This opened on March 25th, 1977 as Round Lake Commons. Its grand opening ad can be found in the photo section.
I lived in nearby Grayslake from 1975 to 1985, ages 9 to 18. When this theater opened my family and I frequently saw movies there as the next closest indoor theater was miles away in Waukegan (The Lakehurst Cinema). I remember pestering my Mother to take me to see “Jaws” there and then regretting it. I never swam in any body of water that wasn’t a swimming pool ever again. And even then I had trepidation. Few years later, my best friends older brother took us there to see “Alien”, and needless to say I spent the remainder of my childhood awake at night. WIDE AWAKE!
Once operated by Plitt.
The Round Lake Twin switched from first-run to second-run on September 14, 1988, which still retained its Cineplex Odeon ownership. The theater also lowered the price from $5.50 to $1.50. This also happened at few other Cineplex Odeon theaters including the West Plaza Theatres in Aurora and the Bolingbrook Theatres in Bolingbrook which happened at the same time.
The Round Lake Twin closed for the final time on October 28, 1990 with “Days of Thunder” at Screen 1 and Walt Disney’s “Ducktales the Movie: Treasure Of The Lost Lamp” and “Pretty Woman” in Screen 2. The closure left Round Lake Beach without a movie theater until the opening of the 18-screener in November 1998.
