Tower Cinemas

The three-screen Tower Cinemas were built by Great Union Theatres to replace the loss of the Strand Theatre in Hunter Street. They opened on 29th April 1976 with the films “Picnic at Hanging Rock”, “Jaws” and “Barry Lyndon”. The seating capacities of the three screens were 732, 450 and 408.

Screen’s 1 & 2 are located side-by-side on the first floor and have walls draped in red and brown/ochre, with the smallest Screen 3 being located on the ground floor, having patterned brickwork walls with red screen curtains. Since 2013 the Tower Cinemas has been run by Event Cinemas. The Tower Cinemas closed on 5th December 2018.

The Tower Cinemas were given this name as in 1865 a navigational light beacon stood on the hill behind the complex. The cinemas stand on the site of a coal mine, which opened in 1825, the first commercial coal mine in Australia.

This complex now being run as an independent with backing and support by event cinemas is a treasure, a really nice cinematic experience

Is the navigational light beacon still there on the hill behind the complex?
