Ruby Theatre

The Ruby Theatre was situated in To Kwa Wan on the Kowloon side of Hong Kong.
It opened to business on 16th May 1964 with a programme of Mandarin films, and showed first run Chinese dialect and English language films until its closure on 27th March 1994.

Its 1,895-seat auditorium with a 49 foot-wide screen and equipped with Mole-Richardson Gaumont-Kalee projectors and sound system was on the first floor of the theatre building. The lobby with ticket booths and confectionery was on the ground floor. An escalator connected the lobby with the spacious lounge for the patrons of the back stalls on the first floor, and a wide staircase on the first floor lead to another lounge on the second floor for the patrons of the dress circle.

From 12th September 1976 until 18th September 1976, the theatre suspended business temporarily for the mourning of the death of Chairman Mao of the People’s Republic of China.

Closed on 27th March 1994, it was demolished in April 1994. A residential building was built on the site of the theatre.
