Cines Palau Balana

Located to the south of the city centre close to the mainline Sants railway station, the Cine Palacio Balana was built for and is operated by the Balana group. It opened on 11th December 1965 with Peter O'Toole in "Lord Jim" presented in 70mm. Designed by architect Pere Ricart Biot, with the designs and decorations by noted architect and interior designer Antoni Bonamusa. It had a seating capacity of 1,610 in stalls and balcony levels.

The exterior has a glazed facade over the entrance, while the auditorium block, running parallel to the street on the right of the entrance, is covered in geometric tiles. Inside the auditorium, there were more geometric blocks on the side walls and the screen was floating, with no masking or curtains. The Cine Palacio Balana was equipped with 70mm facilities.

In recent years (after 1995), the cinema was sub-divided into seven screens and had a slight change of name to Cines Palau Balana. Architectural firm MMASS Arquitectes redesigned the cinema. Seating capacities are for: 145, 156, 153, 168, 277, 248 and 286. It was closed in the late-2010’s.
