An effort is officially in underway to begin restoration of the Lyric theater in this small thriving college town of Eastland. Currently, (2/22/08), the only visible reminder of this theater on Eastland’s town square is the original red metal "Lyric" sign letters on display in a glass storefront of the gutted building where the theater was housed. They were removed from the theater in 1937 when it closed. Let’s hear it for Eastland! This will become the second theater they have saved, the other being the Majestic.

A March 2008 photo of the Lyric Theater and a 1946 newsprint photo of the Lyric here.
In the posting I incorrectly stated that the Lyric closed in 1937 and should have said the Lyric sign letters were circa 1937.
A closer view of the Lyric Theater in Eastland.
The address should be changed to 105 S. Lamar. The Majestic is up the street on North Lamar.
There is a sign on the Lyric that says something about a community theater. I couldn’t read the first word.
Renovations on the Lyric Theatre in Eastland, TX began in 2009 when the facade work started. As of today, this work is near 99.9% complete. Interior designs have been submitted to an architect and once blueprints are completed, bids will be sought on the project. To learn more, and see photos of the project go to our Facebook page at: EastlandCentreforthe Arts.
Thanks!

I am a Board Member for the Lyric, which is currently in renovation. We do have a wonderful movie theater in Eastland called the Majestic. The Lyric is a community theater for live events, and well worth a visit. Eastland oil producer Col. Robert D. Gordon was one of the earl investors in Hollywood. At one time (circa 1927) Eastland had no less than 17 movie theaters!
To respond to Chuck 1231’s question, as a part of our community’s efforts to preserve the larger historic district, the Lyric Theatre is the subject of a current campaign to raise funds for renovation. The Lyric will serve as a community theater, hosting a variety of live events, including dinner theatre and concerts, and more.
The building immediately to the South, formerly Salvatore’s restaurant, is available for sale. The Lyric Board and other community leaders are in the process of obtaining professional counsel from an architect and appraiser to ascertain whether it would be better to buy and annex the Salvatore’s property or simply move forward with the original plan to renovate the existing Lyric building. There are advantages and disadvantages either way, but the upshot is that progress is being made, thanks largely to tireless work by Terry Simmons, Head of the Board of Directors, City Manager Ron Holiday, and Cecil Funderburgh at the Chamber of Commerce.
