Urgel Cinema

Located in the south west of the city centre, the Urgel Cinema opened on 20th September 1963 with Dorothy Dandridge in "Carmen Jones". It was built for the Balana group and initially, when first planned in 1960, was designed to have a seating capacity of 2,324. The architect was the noted local Catalan architect and interior designer Antoni Bonamusa.

Seating in the auditorium is provided for 1,172 in the orchestra level and 660 in the balcony level. It was equipped to screen 70mm and 35mm films. The striking interior decoration has long slender troughs extending in the ceiling, from the rear of the auditorium to the proscenium, and these contain concealed lighting. The actual proscenium is a curtained wall, across the large screen behind. The cinema has two sets of tabs, one house curtain which is red and one screen curtain which is white.

The Urgel Cinema was the main premiere cinema in Barcelona and film premieres were held here regularly, attracting large crowds. It was one of the largest single screen cinemas operating in Europe. Sadly it was closed on 31st May 2013 with Vin Diesel in “Fast and Furious 6: The Game”.
