The 488-seat Walnut Theatre was opened on January 28, 1925 with Rin Tin Tin in “Where the North Begins”. On January 22, 1937 the levee broke, flooding the town and the theatre which was closed for seven months for renovations. It was given an Art Deco style makeover and reopened on July 16, 1937 with Walter Brennan in “Affairs of Cappy Ricks”.
It was renovated in 1987 after being closed for some time. One newspaper article a few years ago called this single screen first run house "one of a dying breed".
It was closed in summer of 2009. In February 2023 it was announced that the theatre had been taken over by new owners and that it would be restored to become a community based performing arts theatre, with a 2025 planned opening.
